A security guard was killed and five others were wounded in a pair of shootings overnight in Deep\u00a0Ellum, Dallas police said Wednesday.<\/p>

Officers were first dispatched about\u00a010:20 p.m. Tuesday to the 2900 block of Commerce Street, where police spokesperson Corbin Rubinson said five people had been struck by gunfire.<\/p><\/div>

A second shooting was reported three blocks away two hours later near a nightclub in the 2800 block of Elm Street. Police said Detorius Tarver Jr., 23,\u00a0shot and killed a security guard who was trying to break up a fight involving Tarver.\u00a0The security guard, Joseph Gray, 26, was pronounced dead at a hospital.<\/p><\/div>

Tarver was booked into the Dallas County jail, where he faces a murder charge. He was still on probation after pleading guilty in 2024 to a felony charge of evading arrest in a vehicle in Dallas County, court records show. It was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney.<\/p><\/div>

Police have not announced an arrest in the Commerce Street shooting.<\/p><\/div>

The shootings come as public safety in Deep Ellum has drawn renewed attention from residents and city leaders, particularly after violent crime rose in the entertainment district last summer.\u00a0<\/p><\/div>

The increase led to a number of community meetings and prompted the Deep Ellum Foundation, the nonprofit that helps manage the neighborhood, to revise its public safety plan. The group wants the city to rethink how it regulates late-night venues, calling for the creation of a new permit for businesses that regularly host entertainment after hours.<\/p><\/div>

Stephanie Keller Hudiburg, the nonprofit’s director, acknowledged the \u201cdeep sadness\u201d the neighborhood was facing after the shootings\u00a0and thanked police. She also\u00a0echoed calls for the city to act on recommendations in the group\u2019s public safety plan.<\/p><\/div>

\u201cWe continue steadfastly in our mission to do everything in our power to protect Deep Ellum and welcome everyone to a safe, inviting neighborhood,\u201d she said in a statement.<\/p><\/div>

The nonprofit has credited its 2022 safety plan with helping pave the way for Dallas police to create the Deep Ellum Task Force, a team of officers assigned to the neighborhood Wednesday through Saturday. Referring to that schedule,\u00a0Rubinson said the task force was not in the entertainment district\u00a0Tuesday evening.<\/p><\/div>

The nonprofit’s amended plan, released in March, calls for expanding the task force from its current four-day schedule to a seven-day presence by adding a second eight-officer shift and another sergeant.<\/p><\/div>

Last month, Dallas police Chief Daniel Comeaux approved expanding the team to cover the rest of the week. The additional officers are expected to be in place by June, Rubinson said.<\/p><\/div>

Hudiburg said the nonprofit hired additional off-duty officers to work Tuesday evening in anticipation of Cinco de Mayo events.<\/p>

Gray was working security at La Tardeada, the nightclub where Tarver was when the fight began, an officer wrote in an arrest warrant affidavit reviewed by The Dallas Morning News.<\/em><\/p><\/div>

Tarver fired one round inside the club, striking Gray in the chest, the affidavit says. Other security guards who witnessed the shooting tackled and handcuffed him, and police later recovered a firearm from his pants.<\/p><\/div>

A representative for the business did not comment on the shooting when reached Wednesday.<\/p><\/div>

City Council member Jesse Moreno, whose district includes Deep\u00a0Ellum, said it was \u201cnot surprising\u201d the shooting happened at La Tardeada, which he said has run afoul of city permitting rules and code requirements since it opened less than a year ago.<\/p><\/div>

\u201cDeep Ellum continues to receive additional police patrols and resources,\u201d he said. \u201cHowever, when there are bad operators, it does not reflect the work that we do there on a daily basis and the partnerships we have there.\u201d<\/p><\/div>

As the neighborhood’s coffee shops and cafes opened Wednesday morning, subtle reminders of the crime scenes remained. Near a restaurant on Elm Street, balloons in the colors of the Mexican flag sat outside, a token of the night’s Cinco De Mayo celebrations.<\/p><\/div>

A few steps away, bloody footprints stained the sidewalk.<\/p><\/div>
