Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is demanding proof that\u00a0school districts across the state, including three in the Dallas-Fort Worth\u00a0area,\u00a0are displaying the\u00a0Ten\u00a0Commandments in classrooms, as\u00a0<\/span>required by a 20<\/span>25<\/span>\u00a0state law<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>

Paxton\u2019s office announced the investigation Thursday. As a part of the investigation, the attorney general\u2019s office is also demanding that the 29 school districts turn over proof that their boards have voted on a policy to require school prayer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

The 29 districts targeted by the investigation were\u00a0involved in lawsuits challenging Senate Bill 10, which requires public schools to display donated copies of the Protestant version of the Ten Commandments in classrooms.\u00a0Dallas, Fort\u00a0Worth\u00a0and Plano ISDs are among the districts.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

Officials with Dallas, Fort Worth and Plano ISD<\/span>s\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0immediately\u00a0respond to\u00a0requests\u00a0for comment.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

The requirement has been a topic of ongoing court battles since\u00a0before\u00a0the law went into effect in September.\u00a0In August,\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span>federal\u00a0<\/span>judge barred 11 districts<\/span><\/span>, including Plano,\u00a0Austin\u00a0and Houston ISDs, from putting up displays.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

In\u00a0a separate lawsuit, a federal judge\u00a0<\/span>issued a\u00a0<\/span>ruling<\/span>\u00a0in November ordering\u00a0<\/span>14 districts<\/span><\/span>, including Fort Worth, Arlington, McKinney, Frisco, Northwest, Azle, Rockwall, Lovejoy and Mansfield, to remove their displays.\u00a0The same month, Paxton sued Round Rock,\u00a0Leander\u00a0and Galveston ISDs,\u00a0seeking\u00a0to force them to put up the displays.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

Last month, a federal appeals court ruled that\u00a0<\/span>Texas may enforce the requirement<\/span><\/span>, saying the displays\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0constitute religious indoctrination.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

In a statement, Paxton pledged to \u201cfight for students\u2019 fundamental right to pray in our schools and work to ensure that Texas kids are able to learn from the Ten Commandments daily.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>
