{"id":33,"date":"2026-05-06T21:12:39","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T21:12:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dallasrelocationhubs.com\/?p=33"},"modified":"2026-05-10T15:11:50","modified_gmt":"2026-05-10T15:11:50","slug":"tenth-street-neighborhood-in-southern-dallas-gets-online-museum-to-highlight-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dallasrelocationhubs.com\/?p=33","title":{"rendered":"Tenth Street neighborhood in southern Dallas gets online museum to highlight history"},"content":{"rendered":"<article>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" width=\"1\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><span>In an Oak Cliff neighborhood that was once bustling \u2014 before a highway sliced through \u2014 its descendants are now working to cement its story as historic homes disappear.<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>The Tenth Street Historic District has been\u00a0distinguished\u00a0as one of the\u00a0nation\u2019s most intact\u00a0freedman\u2019s\u00a0towns and\u00a0one of the most endangered historic places.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0where a new digital museum comes in.<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>The effort\u00a0brought\u00a0one woman\u00a0who grew up in the area\u00a0to tears.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/dallasrelocationhubs.com\/?p=31\">ADL counts fewer incidents of antisemitism in 2025, but fears \u2018new normal\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><span>\u201cThis history is not\u00a0just important, it is cherished stories of humble and determined people and their families,\u201d\u00a0said 88-year-old Bessie Slider Moody. \u201cIt just gives me joy when I think about it. I get emotional.\u00a0What this project has done is take those stories, our stories, and lift them to a place where they will never be forgotten.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>The Tenth Street Digital Museum launched in April. It uses a\u00a0collection of stories in the Library of Congress, along with oral histories and updates,\u00a0to tell the story of the neighborhood. Tameshia Rudd-Ridge launched the museum with her cousin Jourdan Brunson on a\u00a0digital archive they founded for Black families, named\u00a0kinkofa.<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>\u201cWe saw an opportunity to support and help develop the story out more,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Rudd-Ridge, who said she has family history in the area.<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span><strong>Related:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span><span>Historic church in Oak Cliff\u2019s Tenth Street district is celebrating 140 years with a party<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>The museum\u00a0maps\u00a0the area\u2019s timeline, names the visionaries who helped build the community, shows its successes and describes how it was changed over time \u2014 all from the perspective of oral histories and documents.\u00a0It shows how Interstate 35E sliced through the heart community in the \u201850s and outlines community advocacy that it says led to a 1993 landmark designation from the city.<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>\u201cThe community was built by people who came out of bondage with faith and determination and dignity,\u201d Moody said.<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>The area has seen its historic spaces shrink\u00a0over time.\u00a0Between 2006 and 2026, at least 75 structures in the district disappeared, according to the museum.\u00a0In recent years,\u00a0<\/span><span><span>neighbors resisted rules<\/span><\/span><span>\u00a0that allowed small homes to be demolished.<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>Moody\u00a0is now telling her story\u00a0<\/span><span><span>on the Library of Congress website<\/span><span>,<\/span><\/span><span>\u00a0as part of\u00a0a collection\u00a0that stemmed from a project,\u00a0<\/span><span><span>If Tenth Street Could Ta<\/span><span>lk<\/span><\/span><span>.\u00a0Moody\u00a0is\u00a0intertwined in Dallas\u2019 history\u00a0in other ways\u00a0as well.\u00a0As\u00a0a\u00a0teenager,\u00a0she\u00a0worked to\u00a0<\/span><span><span>desegregate the State Fair of\u00a0<\/span><span>Texas<\/span><\/span><span>\u00a0and\u00a0was in a youth group under the guidance of\u00a0the late\u00a0civil rights leader\u00a0<\/span><span><span>Juanita Craft<\/span><\/span><span>.<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>\u201cTo know that people, not just in Dallas but across the country, around the world, can now learn about Tenth Street, is something I never could have imagined, even when I was growing up and thinking about bigger things,\u201d Moody said.<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>She\u2019s\u00a0just\u00a0one of the people Rudd-Ridge and Brunson interviewed,\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0work\u00a0to tell Tenth Street\u2019s story\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0start with them. It stems from a\u00a0project\u00a0created\u00a0by\u00a0late\u00a0historian\u00a0<\/span><span><span>George Keaton Jr.<\/span><\/span><span>, who founded Remembering Black Dallas, Rudd-Ridge said. She said she met Keaton on a\u00a0<\/span><span><span>bus tour in 2021<\/span><\/span><span>\u00a0and told him about her family\u2019s history. He challenged her and asked, \u201cWhat are you going to do about it?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>Keaton\u00a0was carrying on the work from\u00a0Mamie McKnight, who grew up in the\u00a0Tenth\u00a0Street area and was\u00a0<\/span><span><span>director of Black Dallas Remembered<\/span><\/span><span>.\u00a0She\u00a0<\/span><span><span>died in 2018<\/span><\/span><span>.<\/span><br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>\u201cWe\u2019re\u00a0all from different generations,\u201d\u00a0Rudd-Ridge said, adding\u00a0that they were all called to\u00a0carry on the work of\u00a0preserving\u00a0their history.<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>Rudd-Ridge said\u00a0the collection\u00a0came together through collaboration with Remembering Black Dallas and the\u00a0Tenth Street Residential Association.<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span><strong>Related:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span><span>Tenth Street neighborhood, a treasure trove of Black history in Dallas, fights to remain intact<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>\u201cIt was really focused on collecting living memories that people have, and then we thought about different ways to share that,\u201d Rudd-Ridge said.<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>But there were limitations. The collection is static, Rudd-Ridge said. With materials scattered across institutions, the museum serves as a connector, putting archival records in context.
