While the Dallas-Fort Worth area continues to lead large U.S. metros in job creation, demand for skilled workers is outpacing supply. A Boston Consulting Group analysis projects a shortfall of more than 20,000 workers in living-wage, non-college roles by 2030, even as many residents remain underemployed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>Workforce experts say those gaps are often concentrated in fields like healthcare, skilled trades and logistics, where many jobs do not require four-year degrees but can offer stable wages.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div><div><div><div><div><svg><desc>Dallas News Logo<\/desc><\/svg><\/div><\/div><div><svg><\/svg><\/div><svg><\/svg><\/div><\/div><h3><div>Don&#8217;t let Google decide who you trust.<\/div><\/h3><div>Make Dallas News a preferred source so your search results prioritize writing by actual people, not AI.<\/div><div>Add Preferred Source<\/div><\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>Vistra and Fifth Third Bank\u2019s money will help scale \u201c<\/span><span><span>Pledge to Pathways<\/span><\/span><span>,\u201d\u00a0a new effort urging employers to commit not just dollars, but actual interview slots and hiring pipelines for graduates of Pathways to Work training programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>\u201cBy taking the Pledge to Pathways, business leaders across our region are stepping up to connect people to good jobs that provide stability, dignity, and real career pathways,\u201d said\u00a0Jennifer Sampson, who recently stepped down as United Way\u2019s\u00a0McDermott<\/span>\u2011<span>Templeton\u00a0president and CEO to lead The Stephens Greth Foundation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><nobr><strong>Related:<\/strong> <\/nobr>Living wage hits $48,500 for Dallas County workers as costs continue to rise<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>Pathways to Work, launched about a decade ago, offers industry\u00a0recognized training and credentials in\u00a0high<\/span>\u2011<span>demand\u00a0fields such as healthcare, information technology, construction,\u00a0logistics, advanced manufacturing,\u00a0business\u00a0and finance. Participants can access\u00a0adult education, GED and ESL classes, digital skills,\u00a0work<\/span>\u2011<span>based\u00a0learning, career coaching, and\u00a0childcare and transportation\u00a0assistance.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>The program placed about 5,000 North Texans into better-paying jobs last year, with average wage increases of about 40%, according to United Way.\u00a0Jim Burke, CEO of Irving-based Vistra and United Way\u2019s annual campaign chair, said he wants to triple that to 15,000 placements a year as funding and employer commitments grow.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>\u201cIf all these employers are here, and some want to come to Texas, well, they can only come and be successful here if there\u2019s a trained and available workforce,\u201d\u00a0he said.<\/span><\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/dallasrelocationhubs.com\/?p=759\">She learned she was pregnant in ICE detention. After she miscarried, officers cuffed her to a hospital bed<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>Texas Workforce Commission projections show\u00a0that\u00a0up to a million\u00a0skilled<\/span>\u2011<span>trade\u00a0and similar jobs could open statewide by 2035, Burke said. Many do not\u00a0require\u00a0a\u00a0four<\/span>\u2011<span>year\u00a0degree and can grow into\u00a0six<\/span>\u2011<span>figure\u00a0careers within a few years of high school.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Related:<\/strong> AI is making it harder to land entry\u2011level jobs, Dallas Fed report finds<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>However,\u00a0many workers fall through the cracks between classroom and career\u00a0because &#8220;hiring and placement\u00a0is\u00a0not easy,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>Pledge to Pathways is meant to tighten that link. Employers who sign on agree to share upcoming job needs, help shape curricula with training\u00a0partners,\u00a0and actively consider graduates for open roles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>United Way also wants\u00a0to build a technology hub that connects recruits, training programs and hiring employers in real time. That means\u00a0workers can see which courses exist,\u00a0while\u00a0companies are prepared to hire on the other\u00a0side.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>The initiative&#8217;s impact is\u00a0evident\u00a0for Henry, who\u00a0moved to North Texas years ago after\u00a0a traumatic car crash in Detroit left her on disability and unsure if she would walk or use her hands again.
