Texas\u2019\u00a0public\u00a0school\u00a0enrollment declined by\u00a0more than\u00a076,000 students\u00a0at the beginning of the current school year,\u00a0according to a new report by the\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The decline is the largest single-year drop in public school enrollment the state has seen in modern history outside of the COVID-19 pandemic. The enrollment decline comes despite rapid population growth in the state.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

Enrollment declines have forced districts to make\u00a0difficult decisions. Several North Texas districts, including Grapevine-Colleyville, Grand Prairie and Fort Worth ISDs, have closed campuses over the past few years in response to declining enrollment. Some, such as\u00a0<\/span>Coppell ISD, are looking at ways to market themselves<\/span><\/span>\u00a0in the face of more intense competition from charter schools and other options.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

The report points to three main factors driving the drop: declining birth rates, shifting migration patterns and increased competition from private schools and home schooling.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

The report\u2019s authors project the decline to continue in the coming years. They note that the Texas Demographic Center predicts the share of people younger than 18 will decline to 18% in 2060 from 25% in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>
