For families, that can mean missed financial aid, fewer options after graduation, and a harder path to higher-paying jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>\u201cWe want to ensure that every single student graduates with a plan and the support they need to realize it,\u201d Education is Freedom\u00a0<\/span><span>president and\u00a0<\/span><span>CEO Susanna Russell<\/span><span>\u00a0said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>That support has been the difference between uncertainty and a clear path to college for students like DeSoto High School senior Aiyana Nolen.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><section><div><div><button><svg><\/svg><\/button><button><svg><\/svg><\/button><\/div><\/div><\/section><div><div>\n<p><span>Nolen first heard about EIF during her junior year from a friend who was getting one-on-one help with scholarships and college applications. She finally followed her curiosity at the start of her senior year when she walked into the EIF office on campus. She immediately felt welcomed by advisers, Nolen said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI wasn\u2019t just a statistic to them,\u201d she said. \u201cThey really did care about me outside of my academics and who I was as a person.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><\/div><div><div><div><div><div><div><svg><desc>Dallas News Logo<\/desc><\/svg><\/div><\/div><div><svg><\/svg><\/div><svg><\/svg><\/div><\/div><h3><div>Don&#8217;t let Google decide who you trust.<\/div><\/h3><div>Make Dallas News a preferred source so your search results prioritize writing by actual people, not AI.<\/div><div>Add Preferred Source<\/div><\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<h2><span><span>What families and students can expect on campus<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>EIF provides \u201csustained, consistent, [and] personalized\u201d\u00a0advising\u00a0year-round to ensure students do not lose help, Russell said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>Initially,\u00a0in\u00a0DeSoto ISD,\u00a0a small team of EIF advisers focused mostly on seniors.\u00a0With the Maycomb-backed expansion, DeSoto High School now has a six-person advising team serving students in grades nine through 12, said lead adviser Rebecca Burns.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>\u201cBefore I was here, I was one of the advisers only working with seniors, a certain group of seniors, but now, with the growth and expansion, we serve all students,\u201d Burns said. \u201cStudents, when they heard that, [came] running in, ready for support and just excited about what their future could look like.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>DeSoto High School students can walk into the college and career center during lunch or after being pulled from class. Advisers help with scholarship searches, SAT and ACT sign-ups, essays and applications, and contact parents directly about financial aid forms.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>Lauren Beed\u2019s introduction to EIF came when Burns visited Beed\u2019s English III class and walked students through\u00a0SchooLinks, the college and career platform the district uses. Beed, a DeSoto High School senior, said that first classroom visit led her to create an account, answer questions about her interests and begin exploring colleges, which became her first real interaction with an EIF advisor.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>Beed said that support became crucial when she and her mother attended a FAFSA night on campus, where EIF staff walked them through the financial aid form line by line. Advisers also helped her navigate the early stages of a highly competitive merit scholarship application she ultimately won, clearing the way for her to enroll at Texas Christian University as a political science major.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>DeSoto\u2019s senior class already has secured more than $17 million in scholarship offers, Burns said. That number includes\u00a0Nolen, who said advisers walked her through scholarship applications and college decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>After an early wave of scholarship rejections and college deferrals, Nolen said she leaned on EIF, who kept her focused on the bigger picture and encouraged her not to give up. That persistence helped her earn a full ride to Texas A&amp;M University, where she plans to study biomedical sciences on a premed pathway to eventually become a pathologist.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>The model is similar in other southern Dallas County districts. At Duncanville High School, EIF lead adviser\u00a0Garrinecia Singleton said her six-person team sees at least seven students each per day and keeps an open door policy in the Go Center.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>\u201cWe really have a holistic approach to advising our students,\u201d Singleton said. \u201cThere is no perfect plan, and so everyone\u2019s different, but we really help them with college access, trade school access, and if they want to go into a gap year, what that looks like.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>At Cedar Hill High School, the investment is funding a three-person advising team focused primarily on seniors while also supporting some 9th- through 11th-graders through the Dallas County Promise program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>The team uses a data tool every morning to see where each student stands in the college, financial aid or military process, and then builds the day around those needs. Advisers set daily goals for how many seniors they will meet, and they use the block schedule to pull small groups throughout each period as well as during lunch.<\/span><\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/dallasrelocationhubs.com\/?p=789\">Tuesday forecast to be warm, sunny in North Texas. When will rain return?<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>The extra staff has made it easier for Cedar Hill to identify students who are stuck and intervene before they give up on their plans. Staff members say student engagement is high, with seniors frequently showing up during lunch for help. However, they also see a gap in parent participation and are trying to close it through more direct outreach.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>In Lancaster ISD,\u00a0Patonia\u00a0Bell, the district\u2019s chief of access and accountability, said their three EIF advisers have helped them bolster the number of students who have completed their\u00a0FAFSA applications for college financial aid.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>\u201cJust having the extra assistance and support with those individuals has allowed our students to gain access to the opportunity to apply to more colleges,\u201d Bell said. \u201cThe ability to help them gain access and opportunities has doubled, if not more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>Stepheny Cabrera, EIF\u2019s lead adviser at Lancaster High School, said some of her favorite moments this year have been helping Spanish-speaking families, given her bilingual background.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>In DeSoto, Anita Perry, the district\u2019s executive director of CCMR and counseling services,\u00a0said EIF\u2019s advisors work alongside the district\u2019s GEAR UP program, which has followed current 9th- and 10th-graders since middle school.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>\u201cWe are preparing them at all levels, middle school, our 9th grade, our 10th grade, and now our 11th- and 12th-graders,\u201d Perry said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>EIF also works with high schoolers to complete the\u00a0<\/span><span><span>Promise Path form<\/span><\/span><span>, an online form connecting students to college and career support services from the\u00a0<\/span><span><span>Dallas County Promise<\/span><\/span><span>\u00a0program, a scholarship and\u00a0advising\u00a0<\/span><span><span>initiative<\/span><\/span><span> for high school seniors that covers any remaining tuition after financial aid. The path form is open to students who attend participating high schools beginning in 9th grade.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>Nolen said many of her classmates still assume EIF is primarily for seniors, but she urges younger students to start visiting the office as early as their\u00a0freshman\u00a0year for academic, college and even personal guidance. She describes EIF as a backbone for students in DeSoto, providing counseling and encouragement when life outside of school threatens to derail their plans after graduation.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<h2><span>How the investment could pay for itself<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>Maycomb\u00a0Capital\u2019s investment is structured around Texas\u2019 College, Career and Military Readiness outcomes bonus funding. Under House Bill 3 passed in 2019 and related legislation, school systems can earn additional state money when more of their students meet post-secondary readiness benchmarks and enroll in college or other qualifying pathways.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>Andi Phillips, founder and managing partner of\u00a0the New York-based\u00a0Maycomb Capital, said the firm made a loan to Commit, which passes the money to EIF to hire advisers and expand services.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>\u201cThe idea is that they are using the proceeds of that loan to fund the work of Education is Freedom that is delivering high-touch advising to students across Dallas County,\u201d Phillips said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>When advising helps more students enroll in and complete postsecondary programs, districts receive larger state bonus payments. Portions of those payments then flow back through EIF and Commit to repay the loan, Phillips said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<h2><span>Why this matters for southern Dallas County<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>Local leaders say the long-term stakes go beyond acceptance letters. Bell pointed to data showing that although about two<\/span><span>&#8211;<\/span><span>thirds of one recent graduating class appeared \u201ccollege ready,\u201d only about 22% were still enrolled in a\u00a0two- or four-year\u00a0program two years later.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>\u201cIt is very concerning,\u201d said Bell, who is studying which barriers keep Lancaster graduates from persisting so the district and its partners can try to remove them.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>Many students do not persist due to financial pressures and other extenuating circumstances, forcing them to leave college and enter the workforce to support themselves and their families, Bell said. As a result, some are pursuing alternative ways to continue their post-secondary experiences while balancing the demands of economic mobility.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div><div>\n<p><span>For students and families in southern Dallas County, the most immediate changes will be visible on campus.
