The <\/span><span>collective\u00a0<\/span><span>launched last year, with hundreds of organizations working to connect North Texas\u2019 vast food network as the region faces a growing population and rising food insecurity.<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span><strong>Related:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span><span>Amid booming growth and increasing hunger, does Dallas need a plan for its food system?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>Arete Health, a local company, launched in 2024 \u201con the premise that healthcare is too expensive,\u201d said Byron Sanders, its CEO and founder. Having previously led nonprofit Big Thought and as a Dallas\u00a0ISD trustee, Sanders said he sees how partnering with the collaborative could help address long-term and wide-reaching effects of food insecurity.<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>\u201cThese ecosystems are all connected,\u201d Sanders said. \u201cIf we take care of the people who take care of the people, then the people broadly are going to be better off.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>As part of the partnership,\u00a0Arete is offering health services for a $65 monthly subscription, rather than a traditional insurance model, for food workers. The membership offers a package of primary care, urgent care, dental, vision and other services. There are no deductibles or copays for its core services. Food insecurity rates are higher in Dallas County than at the national level.\u00a0\u00a0The southern half of the county experiences the larger share of hunger, and south of Interstate 30, life expectancy is about 17 years shorter for some residents when compared with those to the north, according to a <\/span><span><span>county analysis<\/span><\/span><span>.<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>Across North Texas, the\u00a0<\/span>rate of uninsured residents<span> is much higher than the national average of 9.5%. In Dallas County, that number is worse than the statewide figure.<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>A number of socioeconomic factors \u2014\u00a0not\u00a0\u00a0just\u00a0food access \u2014\u00a0are tied\u00a0to\u00a0gaps\u00a0in\u00a0health.\u00a0Areas with lower life expectancies tend to also face issues with access to healthcare,\u00a0transportation\u00a0and basic infrastructure.\u00a0Strauss and Sanders are\u00a0<\/span><span><span>among several <\/span><span>community leaders and\u00a0<\/span><span>organizations<\/span><\/span><span>\u00a0looking\u00a0to improve\u00a0quality of life in the area.<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span><strong>Related:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span><span>Dallas City Council members hear widespread plan to bolster Dallas area\u2019s food system<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><span>Sanders called Arete Health a \u201crevolutionary\u201d solution to\u00a0provide\u00a0healthcare to\u00a0part-time workers and others with less access.\u00a0The\u00a0food\u00a0collaborative, meanwhile, is\u00a0focused on a big-picture plan.
