What we know about the shooting that killed two at Carrollton’s K Towne Plaza

Two people were killed and three others were injured in a shooting that happened Tuesday near a Korean market in Carrollton, according to police.

Here’s what we know:

What happened

A 69-year-old man is accused of shooting and killing two people and injuring three others during a business meeting near the K Towne Plaza, Carrollton police Chief Roberto Arredondo said during a news conference. The man was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit near H Mart at 2625 Old Denton Road. Police said the shooting was not a random act of gunfire.

Status of wounded

All three victims injured in the shooting were taken to a local hospital and are said to be in stable condition, Arredondo said. Police did not release the identities of the two victims killed in the shooting.

“Officers are currently working multiple scene across the K Towne Plaza,”  Arredondo said.

He said there is no immediate threat to the public at the moment. Authorities are working on identifying what led to the incident. 

Community leaders share statements

Carrollton Mayor Steve Babick said in a statement the Korean community has “made their home in Carrollton’s K-Town — as a place to live, work and play.”

The statement said the mayor’s office is extending prayers to the families of the people killed and injured in the shooting.

“We will continue to watch over our neighbors in need as we all search for answers,” the statement said.

Babick also thanked local, state and federal agencies that responded to the shooting.

“We are proud of the Carrollton Police, FBI and our County, State and Federal partners for their swift apprehension – providing peace of mind that events are not random acts and confined to the associates and bystanders at the scene.”

John Jun, board chair of the Korean American Coalition DFW Chapter, said the shooting shocked the entire Carrollton community. Mike Song, who recently ran for Carrollton City Council, echoed the same sentiments.

“This is not something that happens often in Korean communities, especially here in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Carrollton area,” Jun said.

The Korea American Chamber of Commerce of North Texas issued a statement sharing condolences for the family members of those killed and injured.
